Rampage Rally: Re-Volt

Here’s my entry for the Rampage Rally CG challenge.

It’s a video game style animation based on a 1999 video game from Acclaim called Re-Volt. It was an R/C car racing game with interesting tracks (grocery store, museum, toy store) and it had power ups that gave you things like water balloons, oil slicks, and rockets.

Your R/C car had rockets, what more could you want?

Submitted it a couple of hours before the deadline. There were lots of things I would have liked to added/fixed/changed, but a deadline is a deadline.

All assets where taken from the video game. I’ll provide more technical information later.

Open to all comments, good or bad…

Thanks,
Randy

Here’s a short, little ‘Behind The Scenes’ look at this project -

Background Info -

In 2007~08 I decided to get back into 3D art. I downloaded a 3D program called ZModeler which was a modeler aimed at car creation for video games. It could load and save models for the Re-Volt video game. I signed up on some forums for the game using the same user name I use here (that’s where the name comes from) and I created 2 cars for the game. Then I found and started using blender.

For this project, I found an add on for blender 2.79 that would import and export the files from the video game. I imported a lot of game files into 2.79 and had a bit of fixing to do. Fixed some UV Mapping issues and created a material for the object, and saved the files.

Working in blender 3.6.21, I created a quick car rig for the 2 main cars. This rig made the wheels stick to the surface the cars were on. None of the other cars were rigged, they were just animated with key frames or followed a path.

I used geometry nodes for the On Screen Display from the video game. Just a bunch of simple planes parented to the camera displaying text.

Rendered in Eevee at half the resolution for the entry without anti-aliasing, then scaled up 2x to the correct resolution. I wanted the final result to look like a 25 year old video game running at 800x600 display.

Just putting this out there,
Randy

Behind the scenes, now I know.

Not a fan either, but it is good to know what the abbreaviation means.
Revolt was a ps1 game that reminded Me of 16 bits games like crazy machines, very funny games.
Best regards friend, Bye.
