Rat

Note that it is still mirrored and with very basic armature just for a quick pose. I intend to make a fully rigged version for animation, including particle hair.

By what i can see the modeling is perfect. Try turning down the spec down. The only thing that needs work is the armature, but you said that you would fix that, so well done so far!

As Tom said, this is looking great so far, keep it up and keep us updated.

Can you add fur without dramatically slowing down render time?

Looks great. Can see the seam though - have you enabled “do clipping” on that mirror? If so, move the loose seam edges until they stick.

Yes, I believe this should be doable. I’m currently experimenting with fur and this one took less than a minute to render.

If anyone knows how to manage the hair-flow other than with the comb-tool, please let me know how.

I know I added an alpha map to wig of a character to control where hair was growing… perhaps a normal map could give hairstrand direction similar to combing? (I have not experimented to see if this works)

The model is looking great. As for the fur, why would you not want to use the comb tool?
I know I have qualms with it because it makes the particle system not editable afterwards, but it’s the easiest and fastest way to do it. Before Blender had the grooming tools, I used empties with force feilds parented to bones to control the hair on my meshes.
You should use weight painting to control the length of the hair too.

The comb tool works great, didnt know there was a mirror option!

trying to work with blender 2.5 now. Does anyone know a tutorial for the meshdeform modifier under blender 2.5?
