Hello,
I have attempted in the past (recently, in some cases) to create real-world cities inside of Blender and am looking for some helpful sources for data. I’m not sure that this thread belongs in this section seeing as it is intended to address challenges endured when using Blender, but it likely also deals greatly with other programs and external data sources, so… off-topic it is.
Anyway, I discovered the Open Street Map exporter a few months ago and will state that it’s a godsend (also pretty nifty are the free city data offers at cadmapper). But most of the cities don’t have particularly many fully 3D buildings, and osm doesn’t cover any kind of terrain data natively. Hardly a deal-breaker, but when covering a large area or fairly vertical cities, it complicates things greatly.
If you know of any services such as osm that do contain DEMs and/or the heights of most buildings, I’d appreciate any and all tips and info on where to look.
