Every time I go to the rainforest (Not a real rain forest, our local zoo is called the rainforest I try to take a good picture of a leaf-frog, but I just can not get it. Therefore I decided to make my own picture.
I’ve been working on this for a while, and I feel I need a second opinion and some constructive criticism. I particularly spent time on texture mapping, but would also love to hear people’s thoughts on the sculpting.
flydeprutten, i think that is a very good render! the only thing that bothers me is the texture on the belly of the frog. it seems to regular and sharp. i would just get rid of it completely.
i would leave the seam on the log! it makes it look like someone sawed at it a bit, and looks perfectly fine :)!
nice :D!
the position of the frog looks strange. Especially from the front. I don’t know much about frogs but i think the back legs are not so far apart
Also i would increase the intensity of the light. It seems a bit dark to me
hris, brighen up your screen! i like the lighting, but you have a point about the legs. on the other hand, frogs are wierd
also, flydeprutten, i think you shouldnt have the spots on the frogs legs (i just saw now when i zoomed in).
frogs are wierd
@f3l1x
The Render time was not so long. About 15 to 30 minutes for each image. I only used 1500 samples to the first frame, and 750 for the second.

There is definitely something with the legs, but I think it is because of the frog’s position. I do not think it is quite natural to lay on the belly for a leaf frog. They have freekesly long hind legs.
A frog’s back legs are bent up in such a way that they rest at its sides, just under what we’d think of as the ‘knee’ joint…I’ve had several frogs of my own to raise, both aquatic and amphibious, so I should know…
But your work is…stunning! Maybe you could just break up the seam on the log a bit, so that it looks a bit less regular, and then it would look like a crack in the log, or as @f3l1x said, like someone took a hack at it with a saw or some such thing.
The colors on the frog look more than OK to me, and the anatomy, except for the back legs, looks almost like the real thing. I have to work hard to think of this as a model instead of a photograph!
Maybe someday I’ll be able to model like you…
Unfortunately I have been too busy with work, family and children to work on my frog, but now I’ve finally made some progress.
I have worked with the shader on the eyes, I changed the position of the hind legs, I changed the exposure and I have changed a little on the texture of the stomach.
Lovely renders, most things look spot on. Maybe the scene looks a little empty - some thin branches and some leaves and less DOF on the background might help. Maybe bring up the brightness a bit while you’re at it.
I actually have a little bit of displacement on the belly, but I do not think it would be so pronounced when it is stretched out like mine. (By the way, it is a good reference image. )
I’ve tried to make a new version where the frog stands in another pose, and with the temporary tribe moved slightly out of the scene. I have also worked more on the eyetexture.
the new tree and leaves look great, but the leaf the frog is on is way to big and flat
btw, the reference is not mine! still, the ref makes you appreciate how ugly frogs are
