Life has been a whole thing lately. My family and I are expecting a new addition soon, and with that comes a lot of reflection, reflection about how to better provide for them in an uncertain time. Like many in visual effects, I’ve felt the sting of recent work droughts, small gigs, overworked and underpaid, and it’s pushed me to explore a new creative path, that of architectural and product rendering. It’s not as glamorous as working in films, but if done right it can hopefully help my growing family stay afloat.
I live in an old and rickety single-wide trailer, and what better way to practice my arch viz chops than by virtually renovating the place we currently call home?
I began by measuring the space using Meta Layout, capturing the dimensions of every wall, door, and window to create accurate floorplans. The design is 99% true to life, as I did make one small adjustment to a window because I felt it was just too small. From there, I started blocking out the space in blender. It’s kind of shocking seeing what this space could be, with the right budget. That massive cast iron oven retails for 40 grand lol.
This is more than just a project for me, it’s a chance to turn a challenging chapter into something hopeful. Arch viz is a new territory for me, but it’s also helped me to rediscover my passion for creating beautiful 3D renders.
Update: I felt like there was something missing from the living room shot. Spots of it felt very bland or flat, so I played around with the light and filled some of the empty wall space and came up with this.
Aww shucks! That means a lot for someone who’s been having a real tough time getting work in 3D lately. With a baby on the way, migrating from monsters, games, and fx to something more stable like product and architectural rendering means, if I can do it well enough, maybe my family won’t have to struggle so hard.
You’re welcome, that’s really amazing result… it’s hard for me to get such contrast with cycles especially in Archviz. I’m used to corona and I’m not patient with Cycles tweakings to get the desired result. You mean Vray for blender?
The important thing for myself was to get the image close in blender, but to take it to final in Photoshop. that’s where I really pushed the colors and contrast.
Yes, the beta was just released and I am excited to see how it could benefit me, if at all.
