Just as a curiosity really, but when will Blender 2.4 be out? Two, three weeks?

Probably early december.
the contest for the splash screen ends at the end of this month.

yup. we will publish a beta before the final yet, as soon as the new UI is in - hopefully within two weeks. a reason for the beta is to give you guys an opportunity to crit it before going final, for which the target is early December indeed.
