Render Result saving to a file on disk instead of a temporary render Slot

I downloaded a file from blendswap, rendered it and used alt+s to save the render. Instead of asking me where to save a new file, it overwrote a file that already existed in the same folder as the .blend file.

I also noticed that there are no render slots in the window for viewing the render.

Any idea how the file got this way and how to get render slots back?

Thisis the expected behaviour (AFAIK):

  • Ctrl-S saves the file (official shortcut for Save) and stores the old (if one) as backup ( blabla.blend1 )
  • Shift-Ctrl-S saves as… and pops up the file dialog…

(Alt-S does clear the scale for me…) …According to the slots… weird…

Keyboard shortcuts change depending on which editor window the mouse is over. If your mouse is over an image editing window then alt+s will save the image to a file.

Not really related but my favourite “feature” is the difference between the Linux “Save As” dialogue and the one in Windows.

Linux:

Windows:

Why?

Oh yes i missinterpreted…

… of course the image… :man_facepalming:

and yes indeed the menu “Save…” version (and alt-S) usually always opens the file dialog…

Again : weird

Oh yes… maybe their own GUI is given this in a specific order to the underlaying graphics system but one does draw the last first ??.. An noone has noticed that one has to be reversed ?? IDK…
(What’s it on MAC ??)

I just know that when switching between Win and Linux I always cancel the first bunch of saves which is super annoying. Especially if you’re working on a tight deadline, are already stressed out and then “think” you clicked the save as button without noticing it because your muscle memory takes control…

Another serious problem is the only way you know you’re going to save over a file name that already exists is that the file name box turns red. I’m red green color blind. There is no prompt asking you if you are sure you want to save over an existing file like in EVERY other program I have ever used.

Then there’s the keyboard shortcuts for save vs don’t save

S and D are the underlined letters. S and D are right next to each other on the keyboard! It’s either S and N or Y and N or A and O in every other sane program.
