Rendering reflection pattern of modulated surface

Hello,

I am new to blender and I am interested in modeling the reflection pattern of a circular area with circular thickness modulations.

The model basically would consist of a lightsource (a guassian beam), the surface itself, a lens and a camera.
The light enters through a window and the camera observes through a window.
On the camera side, behind the window and in front of the camera is a lens that images the surface.

Do you think that is a good idea to do with blender?
Do you have any good base models or do you know of tutorial that cover this?
