I Modeled, textured and animated it in Blender 4.1. EVEE render.
I Used Freestyle Line set and I created a toon shader for the different parts of the audiotape. Whereas I used an emission shader for all the shapes behind.

Very nicely done. It looks very much like (say, an airbrush artist) might have done “back then.” Your mixture of techniques definitely achieved the desired effect: “the cassette” stands out from the background, and it’s not immediately obvious that there even was “a trick.”
Although I don’t think that any of us … (wheeze) … actually in any way misses “cassettes.”
