Retro Blaster

Great design and feeling to this weapon, jjjuho! I really like the materials and colors you’ve chosen for it, as well as the details which give it a personality and history. I like the Crysis render as well, looks just like it’s in the game!

Hey!
I just finished reading your article on Blendernation
Inspiring!!
However, I’d like to take a chance and ask you, what did you use ambient occlusion render pass for and how? Could you explain it a bit? Thanks! Becasue I never used it

Hey there,

I used ambient occlusion pass to make shape of the gun easier to read for eyes and to make some crevices even darker.

Basically I brought combined pass and ambien occlusion pass to photoshop, put combined below and ao on the top and mix ao with combined by multiply blending. Usually this leads to way too dark outcome so be sure to use curves to manipulate ao brightness so that it wont darker the bright areas, but only the dark areas.

In addition to that I used additional alpha mask for ao-layer in order to make it affect some areas more than others.

Heres a picture which shows the effect of ao in this image

Very nice! But I guess the cables could be improved by increasing the poly. In the side-view one sees some edges on the curvature (in the pov thats fixed by the angle).

I would’ve totally thought the gun was from Bioshock or Fallout. Great job! It’s really convincing (as in awesome as well as the fact that there’s a lot of work and detail into it)

Quite the weapon you have there! Fantastic job. Any tips for a beginner?

Thanks again guys! 8D

Well theres in depth article about creating this gun in Blendernation http://www.blendernation.com/2015/02/02/behind-the-scenes-retro-blaster/ quite few tips down there, though most of it is non-technical more fundamental ones
