Im new to the forums, and been using blender for 3weeks… and im trying to make flowing water like a river, around a mountainous area going to a ocean…, but ive searched around and cant find tut’s for blender 2.6/2.61, on how to make a river using textures(and something else… cant recall atm).
(I saw some of the tuts on youtube. but i cant find any of the controls, like " Cloud texture and Mapping it to Nor", and other things that arent easy to find on 2.61 (for me))
Really appreciate it, if someone could point me in the correct direction… Thx.
The thing you want to do is not very easy to do especially when you are new to blender.
If you don’t understand, what Cloud Textures i.e. procedural textures and normal mapping are, you should have a look at some more texturing tutorials (which doesn’t have to be about rivers, as the things you mentioned are pretty basic to texturing) or the manual.
Also: There are a thousand different ways to do a river. You could post here what you already got and it will be more obvious what (kind of tutorial/help) you need.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxgwa-0e5Jw… this is the video i was somewhat reffering to above… it looks pretty simple… just i dont know how to map it to NOR/COL…, i really cant find them… :(… and ill keep looking on the links u gave me… hopefully im allowed to post links… -_-…
ok, if its just a simple procedural normal map you’re after:
1.Go to the texture tab of the properties window.
2.Add a new texture.
3.Choose the texture type to be clouds.
4.scroll down the texture tab until you see an entry called “influence” with several entries one of them - the color entry - beeing checked.
5.Uncheck “color” and check Normals und the Geometry subsection.
6. Try and give it a render.
You have now mapped a procedural (clouds) texture to the normals of your object.
If you have difficulties with a particular step, feel free to ask.
/Edit:
argh, richard beat me to it again. need to refresh more often.
You could select the plane, and use the wave modifier on it! This is my 2nd day in blender, I uploaded the river I made today also if you’d like to see it :
I added the wave modifier, then turned off the Y axis so that it wasn’t a splash, more like waves. I’m not sure how they did an animated texture, I’d imagine just using the timeline, but not quite sure. As I said, 2nd day
Hope this helps!
This is what ive done so far… i just another question… how do i get rid of the cloud shadow… ive moved the lamp/deleted the lamp, moved the cloud. still has a shadow over the water/rocks…
oh im making this for a science model of the water cycle…
are you sure its a shadow? the hard edge on the left tells me not imo. think you have flipped normals. select the mountains, go to edit mode, select all (A) and do CTRL-N (recalculate normals) …
To get the Texture to move along the plain simulating water simply keyframe its offset location like this
creat a new material
creat a new texture
drag in the time line too frame 0
right click on the x offset location of the texture ( button found in the textures mapping properties)
chose insert keyframe
drag to frame 100
change the value of the x offset to 10 and then right click on the button and chose insert keyframes
hit animate.
thats it your texture will now move along the plane 10 blender unites over 100 frames
