Robert Downey

Edit 08/06:
Here is my last render. I attached a sculpt matcap render. It is 80% blender and 20% Gimp( textures and glow effect)

Hi everyone,
Last year I participated to the second blender life contest. I intented to do a portrait of Robert Downey Jr. I’ve done some work on it these last weeks. I’ve changed all the maps and light setup.
I hope there are enough improvements to enter the gallery.
Best regards,
Shunsq.

Great work!

The skin, especially in the forehead area, seems to have a rather high specularity value and looks a bit greasy in the full-size image (the effect isn’t noticeable in the thumbnail for me), but maybe that matches the reference image (would be interested in that to compare - do you have a link?)?

First: Really great work!

Things i’d like to critique would be the skin shader, it looks more like wax, than like skin, maybe you should fix the SSS here.
The eyes look pretty realistic, but the eyelids seem like hes wearing a mascara (the black border around the eyes), also the hair should have spec, just a tiny bit

To Helmut S.: The problem in that forehead is that in front of the head there is a white shadeless plane, to obtain the nice reflections in the eye. But my skin shader ( 4-layered SSS) contains a reflection layer. So the head reflects that plane. I will try to fix the shine problem and reduce the size of pores.

To Jimmyon: The skin is the first thing one see. I don’t remember how many shaders I’ve done for this model but the skin always looks like wax. I think I’ll change the specularity/cavity layer from Lambert to Oren- Nayar so that light diffuses further over the skin and enhance the cavities. I will add a frontal plane to the left to have speculars on the right side of the head… About the “mascara eyelids”, I don’t know why there is shadow in the bottom eyelid. I built a thin mesh between the eyelid and the eyeball to obtain the thin liquid that is on a real eye. This mesh don’t cast buffer shadows so I don’t know why this shadow is there.

Can someone tell me how to attach better resolution pictures ? My original render is 1919x1600 pixels and the file manager of BA shrank it to 1024x620 pixels.

Thank you for your comments,
Shunsq.

Fantastic !
very photographic look
very realistic expression and hair

Hi Shun http://bafull.cgcookie.netdna-cdn.com/images/smilies/sago/eyebrowlift.gif

Really great work !!
Speaking for myself, I think the skin look like wax because it’s the only part who receive specularity… maybe specular in the hair could fix this problem, and maybe my mind could believed in your picture.

Anyway, nice work buddy

That’s a fantastic head if I had to critque a few things I would start with the skin, you have already got a lot of nice comments on that. I would also comment on the likeliness it is a very good head but I can’t see Downey jr in there. I googled a few pics of him, http://www.mamapop.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Robert-Downey-Jr.jpg, I assume this was your main ref pic as that is what I compared your work too he seems to have the same facial expression. There were lots of nice big head shots of him so there is no shortage of refs.

The clothing could also use some texturing love as right now it just looked like you slapped on a bench of generic shaders.

This is a good face / model / materials / render, but… if it wasn’t for the thread title I would not have recognized him (and I watched quite a few movies with him).

I thought he was charlie sheen for a bit, still good modeling though

Looks more like Charlie Sheen than Robert Downey Jr. or a strange hybrid of the two. Good start on everything else.

Great job!!! Yes the skin is a little wax-like but really really nice

awesome job, but I think the skin looks a little too bumpy if u look lower to the left. I also have to agree that the skin looks waxy. Other than that there isn’t anything wrong with it at all.

Nice work, but it looks nothing like him

I agree with all the critiques so far and will add: - what is the white streak in his eyebrows? - the shirt doesn’t look like cloth - it may just be the lighting, but his left eyebrow seems to be too low in the region near the nose and inordinately thick in the middle - again, probably a lighting issue, but the region where is forhead, brow and nose meet all looks quite rigid.

I’d also say play around with the specularity.

face looks like plastic. human skin generally has little or no specularity

Up. I updated the render on first post.

Great work. It actually looks like him. The eyes and mouth still need some work

Try not to show the lack of hairs on his head (the worst artifact of hair particles), maybe you can simply solve this one with textures painting some black allover the hairs’ area.
I quote gregzaal about face looking like plastic, try to reduce the Scale and Color factor of the SSS layers.
I really like the modelling, it is a very good face and it seems quite similiar to Downey, I would suggest to lower the extremes of the mouth, now it looks to have a strange expression, something similiar to a smile… And try to add volume to the upper lip…
Thank you for posting!

On another forum someone thought some details were painted. I give you a viewport render to show that everything is done in blender.
