"Rules of Thumb" Empirical results from Blender Artists"

Given (W hardware specs) x (X settings) x (Y numbers) = Z results

If this is a thread that someone else has already started please let me know.

Ok I’m a total newbie here, I’m STILL working on my first serious project after 4 or 5 months.

It occurred to me that there is a wealth of data people are repeatedly generating about which setting, tile sizes, file sizes… that work and those that don’t.

In my fumbling I found that environmental textures only render as images in orthographic view, my GPU probably sucks as it runs out of memory trying to render a 203 MB environmental texture with a 28.4 MB blend file, yet it renders just fine using cpu compute. I also found that an 890 MB environmental texture crashes my Blender every time regardless of compute method.

My point is if nobody has already done it why don’t we start an empirical results thread everyone can use so effort isn’t duplicated needlessly.
