Loved it! Thanks for sharing.
This video immediately screamed Babylon5 to me, well done!
I have to agree on some comments, the modeling is very nice, but the DOF makes it look like a model and not a massive ship. It takes away some of the effort you put into this.
I would -love- to see a remake of B5 with the main story lines, and todays VFX. Like the BSG remake
I feel B5 is still the template for proper story arcs and sci-fi. The G’Kar & Londo storyline worked so well, as so many others interwoven.

edit: before people tackle me, I’m also a huge fan of DS9
Thank you so much for the kind words!
The music is from “The Expanse”, a great scifi show! a must see if you like scifi!
Thanks Stan!
I planning to show the General Hague’s fate on this shorts animations.
This is the second one!

Who is IP?
Looks nice. I like how far you have pushed simple features.
As a critique I’d recommend you increase the amount of tertiary detail (small poles, bezels, crevasses…) which will break up the monotony. I felt it was mostly intrusive when a large panel/side was shown for a longer period of time.
The second recommendation is to do a quick study on camera work. I appreciate how many tricks you’ve used to make the animations look more fleshed out. As an example, the focus on auto-focus cameras is quicker and often overshoots the target (depends on the type DLSR, SLR…) compared to the first shot in your animation.
Some of the camera movements are a bit slow, while I understand that the animation is meant to be slower passed and relaxed, some shots just take too long to develop. Human attention span is shorter than we think and it is just getting shorter with todays explosive in your face lifestyle. So, I appreciate a relaxed mood.
Sadly, I am no expert in cinemaphotography so I can’t give exact advice, but will do my best to point out details that I would improve (be warned this is my subjective opinion and should be taken with discretion)
0-15 blur (dof) takes a bit long
15-25 I can’t seem to find any meaningful composition and have trouble catching focus. I can see the model is detailed but its movement is too robotic and threw me off. At 16 and 21 seconds the camera movement is to “3d” – doesn’t feel natural.
Around 27 the sparks all feel the same (lack variation or detail), the torch (laser/plasma) is to strong (might be better if it flickers like irl)
32-40 vehicle again feels weightless (3d-ish). I also can’t find a spot to focus on, had the smaller vehicle rotated I might have had something to look for.
Around 48 the depth of field makes me think that the large ship is a small toy shot on a macro lens. (really old movies with miniature props had similar problems)
52-59 really like the moment. Composition is nice (myb a bit more tilted so you catch the diagonal of the frame – makes for a stronger and more active shot than a direct horizontal line)
1:00 – 1:25 feels slow and relaxed right after the “big moment” before it. Like the timing. Feels like a quality shot. Congrats.
1:40 the texture (looks like JSplacement generated image) is a bit to repetitive, not as it tiles apparently but more like there is nothing major going on. I like the big A decal but it didn’t mean much as I understand it as an arbitrate marking with no real story. Some carefully placed scratches might just do the trick.
1:57 the blur came in too quickly / the text was to slow as I felt a bit lost, misguided might be the right term. I knew something is bound to happen yet it didn’t as quickly as I expected so I felt uncomfortable. The text ad the end is super rough - it comes in on a coloured background that abruptly turns into blackness. I’d have liked to see a longer gradient into the darkness for a slower feel
I really like the planet and would utilize it as a rim light in many of the shots. I imagine it would take some adjusting of the scene rotation.
It also might be a good idea to look into how and when scene cuts are preferable to long continuous shots.
All and all a really great animation, I sadly don’t know the reference so I’m sure I’m missing on some emotional effects, but none the less it had grabbed my attention enough for me to make this hopefully constructive critique.
Best of luck and fun in your future endeavours.
Great job! the Panels on the ship are a bit to big. here is an Image from one of the original B5 files. You can use it as a base for other maps in the future. Also the bump map is a bit too high. I’d tone down the bump and roughness it looks more like rough metal than larger smooth panels at the moment.
IP in this context is short for Intellectual Property. In this case referring to B5.
Thank you so much!
Big scifi fan too! I remember wating to seen every B5 episodes back them, the vfx, all the details in there, physics, all was amazing. And now, done it almost in realtime, is mind blowing!
Thanks you!
Yes! I abused of the DOF because the lack of texture details, it was 4k, but the texture density was not that good.
Thank you!
Nicely done. It’s a lot of fun to explore a space reality, just floating around space looking at spaceships, and astronauts floating by.
The DOF didn’t bother me so much, I think because you did a good job of having the movement appropriate to space and massive objects.
I would suggest for the storyboard-like image sequence that you only show changes in scenery. A number of images in the middle of the sequence seem similar.
I have to say that I read it the moment you post it, I have the time to answer now
Thank you much of this amazig feedback, so detail, coherent and helpfull.
Here are my notes:
About the DOF: I abused of it because the lack of texture details, it was 4k, but the texture density was not that good.
0:52-0:59 / 1:00-1:25: thanks
1:40 totally agree about the “A” logo and the scratches. That would emphasize the feeling of having been in battle.
1:57 You right about the
About the cuts shots, I was searching on a long take, I always love to see long take on movies, It needs a lot of oeverthing and preparation to make it right and can have a great moments, but it can leave you with some inert and transitional moments too. It is a double-edged sword.
Thanks again for taking you time to do this amazing critique!
Thanks for the texture and the comment!
I was looking that metal panel felling, I keep looking for it.
I used this texture in some part of the model, but i switch for a new hi res texture! ![]()
Thanks for the clarification ![]()
Glad to be of help
I’ll keep that in mind! Thank you for the kind words! ![]()
