Sculpted a head and want to put skin on it now,but too many polygons?

Hi there. I looked up a tutorial on how to sculpt a head, and managed to do alright for my first try. My intentions after I was done sculpting it were to add texture to it, then eventually animate the head so it could talk.

The problem is, the tutorial I looked at subdivided quite a bit. When I look at other tutorials for UV mapping and putting on textures, they’re nowhere even close to the amount of polygons/vertices that I have, making it nearly impossible for me to follow their tutorials.

My question is, is there an effective way to add texture/colour for people who have sculpted something and ended up subdividing quite a bit?

I’m still quite new to Blender but I’m really enjoying it so far and am willing to learn.
