Can someone please help explain this, it bothered me yesterday but i pretended I didn’t see it. and today i’m worried to stop trusting this method
as you can see a face with 5 sides is being selected when my choice is equal to 4 and it gets selected with 5 too.

Context matters… Select Faces by Side will work as you expect if you’re in Face select mode…
… in vertex mode faces that share vertices will also be selected.
