How do I select an edge loop? SOLVED
Also how do I use box de-selecting? SOLVED
And duplicating? SOLVED
How do I turn off proportional editing?

to select an edge loop hold down ‘alt’ while clicking to select (same works for face loops)

to deselect with the box tool, use the middle mouse button.

‘Shift + d’ (‘Alt + d’ in object mode to create a linked duplicate)

Toggle proportional editing with the O (letter “oh”) key, Shift+O to change the proportional editing type.
