Trying to mimic the look of an image produced from a scanning electron microscope. I apologize in advance for the lack of detail and anatomic correctness in the body. I was mainly focusing on the head and trying to achieve the effect. Comments welcome. Thanks for viewing.
that’s really very cool. i haven’t messed with particle hair much yet myself, but i’m wondering if there is a way to give it more of a uniform pattern, since that would be more authentic for mimicking a microscope shot. they tend to have a more evenly-fuzzy thing going on. but i’d say you nailed the lighting model
Thanks wolfred! I struggled a lot with this - actually the shader effect was the easiest part. I used the velvet shader in Cycles and that gives a nice effect for this. This is the first time I worked with hair particles. For the eyes I ended up using a bump map texture. I wanted to model that texture so that I could tweak the vertices to make it not look so uniform. I made a flat sheet with all the hexagons modeled, but was having difficulty shaping it over the eye without distorting the geometry. Using a lattice gave the best result, but when I compared it to what I originally had, I liked the look of the bump map better anyway so I kept it. I also used a noise bump for the head and body so it didn’t look perfectly smooth, but my reference image didn’t have it so much. Here’s the reference image I used:
i stand corrected on the hairs, then poor thing even has some hairs coming out of its eye, looks like. looks like you caught them pretty well.
