I think it is somehow related that he lost love of his life, and she had a boy from another man) And the boy was as salt on the wound. But this is just my hypothesis

@AndromaxPro I used this tutorial as main base for the shader, with some changes.
Hair by the way done by new hair System. I converted mesh edges to curves via nodes. Here is tutorial
Together it is quite nice workflow to make such stylized hair
