Shadow advanced question

I’m working on composting 3d models into digital photographs and need help with creating the shadow.
Say I have a simple cylinder that I want to merge into a photo. how would I have the cylinder cast a shadow so that it looks as if it is part of the photo?

Add a Mesh Plane under the models (and shape it so it looks like the ground if the ground in the photo is uneven or convoluted) set to OnlyShadow in Shaders tab, F5.
