Shadow Caustics "Problem"

So I noticed that the Shadow Caustics, at least with triangulated Objects, don’t take into account any smooth shading. As you can see, the individual faces of the mesh are clearly visible.

Am I missing something or are these just the limitations of the technique?

As far as I understand, caustics are a bit limited in this case, because they depend on the actual location of the polygon. which is not changed by the shading. if you want caustics to be the focus of a scene, you should use a subdivided object for that reason.
