Simple SSS Render

The new SSS feature is pretty slow. Here’s something I made. Very standard. Bevelled Smooth Subdivided Cube.

EDIT: Are BlenderArtists.org forum attachments in a lower quality format? My image has gotten a lowered quality on the internet.

How long did the render take?
(your complaining its slow…) :stuck_out_tongue:

Mmmm I wasnt really awre of what SSS really was… Now i see.
It has a consistency to it. A nice technique for wax, ivory etc i guess

SSS= Sub Surface Scattering. A kind of translucent effect. Look it up! :stuck_out_tongue:

I could think of many uses for SSS right off the bat.

-Clouds to blur in the compositor
-Ice/snow that scatters blue light
-Skin (or thin membranes like on the ears and wings of Dragons:D )
-Wax
-Marble
-Jade
-Soap
-Milk
-Other opaque liquids
-Other organic materials

Some I got from the SSS thread.

Slow? try setting the error factor to 0.25 - 0.3

That helped a lot ZanQdo. Thanks for the Windows build by the way.

any tutorial on how to make this?

Step 1: Go to graphicall.org
Step 2: Select (for Windows) “Blender CVS with SSS ZanQdo Edition”
Step 3: Open that version of Blender and go to the material settings.
Step 4: Turn on Sub Surface Scattering.
Step 5: Set the Error factor to >0.3
Step 6: Select one of the presets for a nice result. Try Whole Milk for example.
Step 7: Give the backscatter a higher value, 5 for example
Step 8: Set up some lights around your object (it’s good to try Suzanne with SubSurf Level 2), turn of Ray-Tracing, Shadows and Environment Maps at the render settings and let it render.

This is a result I got:

I noticed there is now also an RC2 for Windows

I’ve been trying to use the new SSS feature in my current project (http://www.max3d.pl/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=45357) but my computer has been crushing every time Blender was supposed to add colours during rendering… I used AO, at least 3 lamps; the mesh I prepared for the consits of more than 100.000 polygons - maybe that’s the reason of my troubles??

rozmiarek: turn off AO. use area lights instead.

It doesn’t work with AO now or is it something natural for SSS technique?
