Skinny man

I like the theme. Skinnyman and buildings are from same world, try to make car from that world also.
Tip: Buy him a bicycle;)

Don’t stop.

Thanks a lot.
I will try making the car fit, so it’ll probably wont look like a DS.

Here are two more renders.
The first one is with the skinny guy (can anyone think of a name for him).
The second one without. There are no extra objects, but adding the skinny guy made the lighting uglier (in my opinion) (not that it’s very good lighting).

Well, if you’re going for a “standard” walk cycle, you need to work on the “high point” and the “recoil” poses. Skinny’s head is swaying side to side, should be bobbing up and down. The arms stay at shoulder height, rather than swinging past the hips, and, yes, the swing is excessive, even for a power-walker.

That said, it could be that walk cycles are highly overrated. Everybody does them, they are in all the portfolios and demo reels, but sometimes they seem more of an academic exercise than a useful bit of stagecraft. It’s pretty rare in tv, movies or cartoons that a main character will just walk along in a straight line, unless it’s an old war movie with hordes of men marching in ranks. I see characters shifting weight from one foot to another while talking, characters taking a step, stopping and turning, moving in the scene with the lower torso out of the picture… Most of the walk cycles tend to be in long range establishing shots showing building exteriors during the day and anonomous people walking in and out of the building or along the sidewalk.

I see more characters open a door and take one step through the door than I see walking along a floor or sidewalk. Let’s face it. Watching someone walk along just isn’t all that interesting, unless they are walking next to someone and talking.

Recent scene from a tv show: character pushes open swinging door, takes one step inside main office, stops, apologises to the room for being late, takes another step toward her private office, camera cuts to her assistant who stands up from sitting position, character steps up and stops, assistant reads from appointment calendar, character nods, replies and gestures, turns and takes one step toward office, camera cuts to inside private office, character takes one step through open door, stops, turns, closes door, hears someone behind her, turns around to see who it is, they have a conversation, and that’s the end of the scene. 20, 30 seconds of stuff and not a single two step walk cycle. There were some background extras walking through the main office, but since the camera was following the character, they never made it through a complete cycle while in camera view either. Besides, they weren’t the main focus of the scene.

I don’t know if I have a point here or if I’m just rambling. I like your new buildings, but they need some texture other than black and grey. Nice beginning on the car, too, but if Skinny’s going to be selling a lemon, you might want to pick a car with a reputation for shoddy quality control (I know I’m starting a flame war) like a Fiat or a Yugo.

Somehow he reminds me of LBA(Little Big Adventure)… don’t know why… it kicked ass, so that’s cool. can’t wait to see more:p

Wow… That blew me away!

I agree on most things you say, but I don’t think walkcycles are overrated. I think they are the only motion that can be reused in every movie.
But since I also partially agree, I’ll make him do something else in my next animation test.

But what kind of textures are you suggesting for the building? Extremely colorful, brownish or more realistic?

Oh, extremely colorful. Explosion in the paint factory colorful. Something about as realistic as the window shapes or the angles of the walls.

OK. I’ll try that out.
I’ll probably be finished in half a hour, right now I’m working on a test-dummy.

Here is a funky version:

And a possible brainless buddy?

Big buddy got some old, shovel-like gloves, a tummy, and a pair of enourmes arms (probably too long as well).

A new colorscheme for the skyscraper…
I also finished “bud’s” body, and the main rig, but I still need to do a hand- and facerig.

Finished the “bud”. I also softbodied his tummy to make it wobble when he moves. Haven’t got any time to make an animation yet though:

EDIT: I don’t think I’ll use this one, it doesn’t seem to fit with the other character…

Sorry for the lack of updates (even though there aren’t any people interested).
I made a test animation of him walking on a tiny globe. I never though it would be that hard to make him walk on a sphere…

Please give me some hints.
Thanks in advance!

pieter.

Oh, we’re interested. It’s just with the beginning of the school year, there are a lot more things going on than during the summer. Takes a while to read and respond.

I like the new colors. I noticed the windows at the top of the building looks a bit like a mouth with two eyes. You could have a talking building!

Have you thought about a plot yet? Here’s a suggestion: start reading folktales. Find a short snappy one with only two characters, and rewrite it for skinnyman and bud.

I mainly have been trying to model a car and some other objects, but none of them seemed to fit. Much to detailed/high poly, or just simply awful.

I also got carried away by school. Probably even more in the next few weeks with twelve major tests…

Thanks for being interested btw.

Post Scriptum:
I deleted “Bud” :frowning:
I’m working on a new one though.

Well… to me he looked like some kind of alien, and it kinda reminded me of a poster i once saw. The scene is bascily like this.

We are in a big city, at one sidewalk looking across the street at the other, theres a lot of skyscrapers in the background, and i think a few pedestrians on the opposite sidewalk. In the middle of the street, in the foreground is taxi, with a alien looking driver, he looks at the camera.

At the top of the screen is a bubble with the following text, reoughly recreated from memory “Excuse me, could you show me to times square”, and the alien respons “No sorry, i’m a alien.”

I’m not sure if he’s in a cap, and i have this weird feeling that the city is new york, but i’m not certain.

You might just make a single pretty render, or you could make a short video?
