Hi Blender Artésts,(I know I spelled Artésts wrong) ,
I thought I should just post my very first “scene” on blender,it’s just a little scene of my desk and the stuff on it. some antique books(sorry no dust) and other stuff. I modeled and textured it. Modeled all in Blender and textured in Wood workshop, Photoshop and Google images. Please just give me your critics and comments. It’s just a model of my desk and it looks like it too. I did it in march and never really worked on it after but I wish to work on it now. I’m just a beginner so don’t expect something too good. Anyways Hope you like it. Here it is:
hey!
I like it! Im new too so I really cant give you alot of critic. but you could try moving the lamp a little so its not that close to the wall and adding some ambient occlusion to the scene so it will kinda look like the light is coming from outside through your window. it will also give it a homey feel:) other than that it looks cooooool man!
Good first rendering work, man!
A bit of curiosity from me… can you zoom on the little elephant on the upper plane?
Ok i will make a new render zoomed in to the elephant and Trueblues700 Welcome to blender artist(also trixy) and I will try that but the light was suppose to be coming from a light on the wall but i could also make a window and do that.
Ok I have done that I just zoomed to the elephant and rendered it and I will try to make it less darker there and trueblues700 I will try to do what your saying but I’m not going to be home today but i will try to do that. Anyways here’s the elephant(I rendered it at the time I have at home) and I just subsurfed it because it was really low poly. Anyways here it is (The thing beside it is suppose to be made out of Popsicle sticks) Also please give your critics on making the elephant better or comments. I made this in art class it’s pottery:

This is pretty awesome for a first scene. All of the objects look very realistic and your sense of proportion and scale is quite accurate as well. Your textures all fit together well, too. I also really like your keyboard cord.
As for critique, on the right side of the desk there’s a little zigzag in your highlight. What’s the geometry of the desk doing there?
I agree with trueblues700 that changing the lighting would make a big difference in the final product. Here’s another vote for putting in at least a bit of ambient occlusion. Also, putting a lamp of some sort on the ceiling in the middle of the room would light things more evening.
Your wood textures would look better if they weren’t quite so perfect. If there was more transition between the two colors of wood, and if they had another layer on top of them to show some more age and variation.
The walls and floor are pretty sparse right now. Maybe some rug texture, a throw rug, maybe some posters or paintings?
Also, now that you’ve got a good environment, think about what you want to say with it and how you want to compose your picture. If you’re interested having your final product be as interesting as possible as well as an excellent exercise in modeling and texturing, it’s a whole new area to have to worry about.
For example, I find your picture of the elephant later on in the thread to be more visually appealing than that of the whole room. I think it’s because the stark light looks moody and the elephant looks a little bit like it’s sad and it’s looking at me. For the picture of the desk, I see a picture of a desk. Which is fine, but if you wanted it to, it could say more. For example, you have what looks like the tajmahal and an indian elephant on top of the desk which go together nicely, maybe something focusing on them. Or maybe make something appear in the monitor and have that light up the room some.
Attached are two quick example that i just made playing around with what you’ve shown us already.

pretty good for a first scene, the game boxes look awkward, like twisted metal head on is too tall, and syphon filter looks a bit too wide, but good luck with it
Ok thanks for your critique Enigmatic I will try to do what your saying maybe model a lamp and try to make it light toward the elephant instead or I could try your idea with the monitor and the rug and other stuff. But for today I have an assignment and lots of HW but as tomorrow I may be free to do some work on this scene. Thanks for all your critics and hope to get more replies. Will post a new render tomorrow or Friday at the latest(matters about my assignment, HW…). But I will try to put a new render soon.
Edit 1: Should I put a rounded rug or rectangler and should I give it a Indian look(Texture)?
I made a rug (also textured it) and I put more emphasis on the Elephant and the tajmahal but the lighting is a little messed up now but don’t worry about that I will fix that(Sorry i made the lighting fast so it’s only focused up witch is fake)and if someone has an idea on how to fix that or anything please say so anyways I finished my HW and i basically finished my assignment so i just throw this a little fast anyways here it is: AND how will I put some age on the wood?
Edit 1: As I arleady said I will hopefully make a major Update render tomorrow or Friday at the latest.

Hi again,
anyways I did another update. I just changed the wall color and made it more appealing, I also did the computer lighting and changed the carpet. I also added a poster of a basketball player.

People say this is realistic- sorry to say but this is not realistic. You need some more experience before you can get to photorealism. I probably will not achieve photorealism until my next year or so. But for a game model, this is pretty good!
Yeah, those things make a lot of difference. I love your rug under the chair and I can see the objects on the desk a lot better now. I’d maybe make the stripes on the wall thinner. I really love what the computer shows, that’s pretty neat showing the same scene from within Blender. The tape on the poster is a nice touch.
Ok. Thanks for all your comments and NOObhaxor, I know this is not releastic. I never said it was. Other people said it was but when i was making it i wasn’t trying to aim for photorealism or anything. Because I probably wont be able to do that intill 2 years if not more(After all it still haven’t been a year for me in the 3D world). I was just making my desk model, that’s all…But I kind of went off track after by adding stuff thats not in my room. Ok I will try making the stripes on the wall thinner. Hope to Put up another update soon. Thanks for all your comments and critiques.
flip your normals on the chair…edit mode then CTRL+N (select the every vert(A))
Ok thanks. Does it actually make a difference if there’s no texture added to it? Because it seems to still look the same since I haven’t added a texture to the chair.
Edit 1: Ya I guess it kind of makes a difference…Or it might just be me.
You seemed to have caught on texturing and UV quick! I was reversed- I caught onto modeling a lot quicker than texturing.
your wood looks too purple
also, your lighting needs some work
Lighing : try adding more than just one light source & different light Emit settings - use multiple spots & lamps (and kill any sun lamps/halo spots)
also, use some different colored lights (eg: white, light blue, orange, red, etc )
Wood: change the map to color or something around there - purple kindof offsets the texture and makes it look weird .
Thanks AMDBCG i will try to change and add more lighting in this scene but i was a bit busy anyways here’s a close up on the monitor:
