this is my first day on Blender and here is my first problem:
When I create a smoke domain, if I switch, for instance, from the “flow” tab to the “domain” tab, then, if I go back again to “flow”, the parameters are reset and I have to do everything again.
Is it a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Same thing is occurring to me…does anyone know, at this point, if this is a bug, or are we the only two doing something odd that is creating the issue?? It even “unticks” the Smoke High Resolution" each time?
If I understand what you are saying you are doing it wrong. An object can be domain or flow. You need two or more objects for a smoke sim. (only one domain, though.) You switch objects, not tabs.
When you switch the tab you are saying that you don’t want this object to be the domain anymore, you want it to be the flow, so Blender clears the domain settings for that object. I hope that makes sense!
It does appear that if I select either the domain, or the plane IN THE SCENE (not using the tabs), that the parameters DO NOT change; however, if I simply adjust Domain criteria, then switch to the Flow tab, I lose input in Domain. Is that what you’re saying, DruBan? To select OBJECTS in the scene and not utilize the tabs ??
Yes, the smoke simulation depends on two objects, one of which should be assigned to be the domain and the other to be the flow. They are not interchangeable.
Thank you! So the domain can be the smoke domain and the flow a particle system for instance?
For a flow object under flow source you have the choice of ‘mesh’ or ‘particle system’ but you have to define a particle system for that object in the particle properties before running the sim. The PS cannot be on the same object that you have defined as domain.
ahh, I made this very mistake today as well - thank you for raising it in this thread and the answers. As far as I understand it, the domain object should be used with the domain tab. If you want to access the flow, it should be done by selecting the smoke emitter object (which is not the domain). If you select that in the 3d viewport, the physics panel on the side automatically shows you flow. So you change between flow and domain through selecting the objects, not using the tabs.
As using the tabs while having an object selected resets the parameters for the object on flow and domain, this still is misleading behaviour. I am not sure how to stop users making this mistake. This is one of the very frustrating occasions and again shows me that you have to look very sharp at the tutorials, as this can be a trapline :o
@Druban - thank you, I take your comment says I have to put the particle system on the emitter object then? I will try that.
