Smooth blend of multiple Shapekeys

Hey, this is my first time here, and I want to ask something.
I’m making multiple shapekeys for the face of my model, but many of them are blends of two or more shapekeys. When I use the “New Shape from Mix” to make these shapekeys, the resulting shapekey looks pretty bad.
My question here is if exist an addon, script, or manual way to make the new shapekey made of multiple ones a bit better looking, or if I have to keep using the default New Shape from Mix and then correct what looks bad by hand. By the way I’m using Blender 2.79, but I can change if the situation requires.

Are you thinking of NLA = Non-Linear Animation? Where the different shape keys are placed into strips and the effect of the keys are then blended together with various transitions?
