I’m not exactly new to blender, but there are large lapses in time between getting to use it (dang job).
I’m having trouble with a model I’m working on. I am trying to achieve smooth curved surfaces on my cylinder with holes “punched through” (let me know if there is a specific term I should use here). Take a look at the attached image. The cylinder in the background has the holes but is not smooth. The cylinder in the foreground isn’t smooth, but has an object that shows where I want to put the holes.
How can I get the holes and smooth sides on the cylinder?
I was attempting to use a high number of faces to achieve the smooth cylinder. I will create a new one with less vertices and take a stab at the suggestions in the post you recommended.
I’m not sure what happened to my last post. I tried to use the rotobo tool but it isn’t working. Everything works fine until I “ctrl+j” and join the meshes. I do this and nothing happens. It doesn’t combine them in any way. Would be awesome if I can get it to work. Rotobo seems to be exactly what I’m looking for.
You don’t need the retopo tool. You can just do it by hand. Simply use the 3D manipulator in Global to drag the points (should only need to 8 of them for the hole) down to the surface of the cylinder) Or shrink wrap modifier is another option. Retopo has always seemed a bit cumbersome to me - but that is just me. Subfurf is a great choice for this kind of thing.
For smaller holes start with a cylinder that has more segments so the edges line up to the holes.
Thanks guys. You helped me get the model finished. I did a quick animation if you’re interested. This a sign bracket. It holds a street name sign on top of a post.
