Smooth transition between two separate models

I was checking ArtStation and stumbled upon this work, nothing especial, good model, but by topology it seems like radio tubes (or whatever it is) and it’s body are separated pieces, but transition between them are smooth.
How it is done?

it’s made with baked normal textures

That simple? No trickery just this? Wouldn’t be here any visible seams?

If it’s baked from high-res model without any seams then it shouldn’t be visible

You can do it in Cycles at a shader level with the Bevel node too if the parts are intersecting and joined in the same object with Ctrl+J

You can do fairly easily with geometry. See attached. I did have to add a bevel modifier and sub-division
modifier to get that smoother effect.

I think the whole point of that thread was to how to make something like this without marging the geometry

Yup. Thanks. Just offered a solution just in case the op needed it. Like you there are others that read posts and catch cool tips from users that they may not be aware of.
