I’m sure this is easy, but I can’t seem to figure it out.
I want to smooth this cylinder, but only around the circumference. The edge I marked in yellow, I want that to remain sharp.
I know I could put in a bunch of edge loops to really control everything, but if I just want it low poly like this, clicking smooth gives me the result on the right. And that is with the edge split modifier, as well.
You can mark edges as sharp in edge specials menu (Ctrl + E) and then use the option “Sharp Edges” from the edge split modifier. See here under options.
Of course if you are just wishing this to be sharp during render (it will not appear that way in OpenGL though) use auto smooth under your object data tab. I would stay away from the edge split modifier for the most part, as this to me is kind of a sloppy work around that I have found only in Blender so far.
