Smoothing Issues

Hey there. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a nooby question. I started using blender a few days ago and was in the middle of modelling a gun when I encountered some problems whilst trying to smooth out my surface. Without smoothing, the gun looks like this (in edit mood, so you can see how it’s assembled):

But after smoothing it looks like this:

The distortion around the top left is obviously undesirable, so if anyone can shed some light on how to fix the problem before I go to the effort of finishing the model then I’d appreciate it!
Side note: I’m planning on using this model for a game but as of right now, I am unsure as to whether or not the poly count is too high. Any advice on getting that balance would also be great.

Thanks!

Inconsistent face normal directions. Useful to use the forum search because this question must the no. 1 top most asked question in the history of the forum

Remove any unwanted faces inside the object
Remove any double vertices (select all vertices and W / Remove Doubles)
Recalculate face normals (select all vertices and Ctrl+N)
Flip any remaining faces with W / Flip Normal

Looks like you may have some non quad faces (more than 4 vertices). Unless you know of a specific reason why you need them, remove them. Ideally have quad faces to prevent further potential errors

Thanks for the speedy reply! I had searched for this issue before posting but couldn’t find anything. Must have been searching the wrong keywords. I realise it’s frustrating for you guys answering the same questions over and over. In any event, thanks! It solved the issues I was having. There are one or two triangles in the model but it’s only a few and I’d say that they’re needed. Otherwise I’d have way more faces. The rest are all quads, although some of them stretched in some not so square shapes.
