Solved! How do I clear unused materials from a scene?

I am importing assets, trees in this case, and they really add to the file size. If I do an Alt+D (create an instance) it only adds a bery small amount.

When I delete an original asset form a scene I noticed that the file size does not go back down to where it was before I imported it. I’m not referring to instances.

Where do I check to clear out all unused materials and such?

In the outliner - display mode “unused data” the purge button.

Then save and reopen the file.
