Well ive tried my first real space scene, and i think that the result is getting there bit by bit… but its still not like i want it to be. Ive worked with the node editor (compositing) and render layers for different parts (example: cloudsphere is a different layer then groundsphere from the planet, etc…). I have placed different sunlamps for each layer to (there are all layer only lamps).
The star background have i made in GIMP.
And the blue planet texture and moontextures are made in Mapzone.
Anyway, i post screenshots from the scene setup, the compositing nodes and the final render for now.
Well, ive made some litte changes on the space scene.
Like Appolo had suggested, i have made a more black star backround in GIMP. Further i have made the ice planet’s falloff visible (It was hidden because some bad node connections i had made in the node editor). Then i have played around a bit with with the node editor to get some settings more like i wanted it to be.
Well here are the screenshots from the current compositing nodes and render.
Good effort overall - what strikes me is the rather bland - moon - kind of gives the impression this being an eclipse, with a bright star behind the moon. I think if you put the light on side ie top left, it will compliment the earth rather well, and the reflected light of earth bouncing on the other side, the moon would certainly be rather neat.
And another thing . . . this is good from an artistic view point . . . would love to view your other sketches etc.
Ok, like KBot pointed out, i had to do something to the lightning setup. The moon is now lighted from the left top of the image, and there is a second (softer) light that comes from the direction of the ice planet. In GIMP i have moved the Big star that was close to the moon to the ice planet. So, both big stars are now in the top left corner of the image. The moon comes out much better now
I have made some small rotation changes to the lights of the ice planet to.
Then i have added some lined up vertices with halo materials to create lensflares from the 2 biggest stars.
Ah, and i forgot to tell before: The clouds from the ice planet is an high resolution earth cloud map, downloaded from the NASA website.
Ill post 2 screenshots from the new scene setup and the final render for now. The compositing nodes stay almost the same like in my last post.
My quick way with GIMP - I make the background into a fill pattern . . . and just fill in the background. The edges sometimes stick out like sore thumb so if I have time I blur the edge manually.
OK, I have started to model some sort of space city. This model is certainly not finished yet but ive thought now that i am sort of halfway lets post it to get some feedback. Ill post a wireframe image and a final render image with from space scene for now. (Note that i havent made any ajustements on the space scene itself since last post, only a very little bit on the ice planets lightning. I have focussed on the space city right now).
But i have saw the complaints and will look to make the nessesairy changes in the scene soon.
Only one thought.
Were i agree with most of the critique (like the lightning setup, ice planets texture and bit desaturated color), i still do like the starfield. I am aware that its not “realistic”, but i once read that one of the most beautiful things in creating space scenes is: “Space is still mostly undiscovered, even the space pictures trough very good telescopes are read and colored by a computer. And that makes plenty of place for imagination in creating space scenes”
I am not aiming to make an realistic space scene, but more my artisic impression of a space scene with some thoughts in the back of my head like: Drama, lonelyness, coldness…
But were i do like the starbackground, the 4 bigger stars are indeed a bit to much, so ill probably will reduce them soon. I think with one main star, slightly bigger then one of the biggest stars now (so there will be only 1 lensflare instead of 2).
Well, i have done some work on my space scene and here is my progress till now.
I have tried to resolve some of the critique i had before.
I have tried to setup the lighting so that it comes overal from one direction.
Then i have modified the star backround in GIMP so that its not so busy anymore (But i know, its still the same background, i still like it in some way ) and deleted the 3 other big stars, so there is only one star/sun left now.
I have deleted some halo flare rings to. But, I am a bit struggling with how the flare is supposed to look… Ive looked a bit around on pictures with flares, but still a bit struggling.
I have worked on the overall ice planet look and it looks better now then before i think.
Anyway ill post the current render from the space scene witoud the space city (because i havent worked further at the space city model since last post).
This looks MUCH MUCH better, and it shows a great potential to be a great scene. BRAVO !
One more comment that I forgot to add earlier, add a bit of glow around your earth - like planet .
And one more comment again , to make me even more annoying , lol, add color to your nebula. I love nebula , but nebula are so complex in color and composition that would be shame to leave this area unexplored.
Ok, i call this project done. Ive textured the rest of the space city and made some slightly changes to the lightning. Ive tried to add a glow to the ice planet, but my pc cant handle that anymore since Blender always crashes when i try to render the image. To many nodes i suppose… (Blender chrashes now already half of the time when i want to render this image).
Anyway thanks to everyone that gave me feedback, it really helped alot
On this link can you see the high resolution render (2000x1000 withoud the black bars up and down and then modified in GIMP to 2000x1400)
