Spaceball 5000 USB

Hi all,
i have a question regarding using a SpaceBall 5000 USB with blender…and yes i have searched this forum but most of the posts seem quite aged (2004-06)…

So i have Windows 7 64Bit and the latest blender 2.6.2.
connected my recently aquired Spaceball (having to use the Vista drivers as Win7 not supported by 3DConnexion!)

all the demos work, google earth etc very nice!!

but in blender the only thing i can do it rotate/tilt/zoom…which is nice but the problem is NONE of the buttons do anything regardless of what i map them too???

as i mentioned they DO work in other apps…it seems just not in Blender, which is a little disappointing as i had read this release includes support for the SpaceBall 5000.

i do dual boot my PC with Ubuntu…i have yet to see if that version works correctly.

just wondered if anyone out there have got a spaceball to work fully??

thanks in advance

Regards

D

OK guys, I may have made some progress here… It seems blender ignores most mappings you have in the 3d connexion software and you have to map controls manually in the blender user prefs. However only buttons 1to9 are acknowledged. buttons 10 to 12 (A, B, C) actually only work with the 3d connexion mappings!

Yes, Blender ignores 3DCOnnexion’s driver settings in Windows, in fact you do not need to install their drivers at all for the mouse to work in Blender.

Currently, to pan along an axis, you must hold down the shift key. Getting this changed and allowing full free motion is being worked on.

3DConnexion is not very open about their older ‘obsolete’ hardware, so unless a developer has access to an older model it is hard to get all of the functionality working.
The A,B,C buttons on the SB5000, should be mapable in the next release (2.63).

I have been working with Mike Erwin (the guy writing the 3dmouse support) to get some of these issues ironed out. I have also built a website to keep track of Blender compatibility with the different models of spacemice in various flavors of OS.

Spacemice / Blender Compatibility

Blender ignores all settings that are set in 3DConnexion’s preferences system. In fact, in Windows, Blender does not require 3DConnexion’s software at all. It will operate just fine using generic Windows USB HID drivers for any USB Spacemouse made by 3Dconnexion. Including the antiquated models that they officially no longer support.

Hi, I have a usb space mouse 5000 I would like to use with blender. I am using blender 2.63a on win xp 32. Inside blender the space mouse will move the scene around but like everyone else I need to switch my axis rotation. Problem is none of the buttons on the mouse open the space mouse config widget. Is there another way of opening the config table using keyboard commands.

Cheers
