Sparks

Hey all,
This originally started as an experiment with the particle info node, but I had so much fun with the concept that I went ahead and made it into an animation.

Created with Blender, rendered with Cycles (over about 2 weeks). Color grading using Magic Bullet Looks.

Here’s a version with motion blur:

And a short animated gif:

And a tutorial:

Hope you like it.

b.e.a.uuuuuutiful  Great work Andrew!!

I swear, the animated gif with motion blur looks absolutely real!

Great work, will check out the tutorial later.

I think it could be a nice new way to create fireworks. Hmm a chain reaction maybe. A lot of beautifull stuff can be created with use of particle info node.

Thanks for tutorial Andy.

The effect is amazing! It does look realistic in the animations and it’s incredible to see something like this done using Blender. Good work.

The sparks at the contact point (where the saw is cutting the metal) are usually more intensely packed. I don’t know if that can be simulated by the particles; maybe two different particle groups - tight by the blade and loosely thrown elsewhere…I don’t know. I haven’t checked out the tutorial yet! :eyebrowlift:

The “sparks” are actually tiny particles of metal being thrown from the saw blade. They are so hot from being cut so fast that they are super-heated and GLOW. Anyway, if you Google “cutting metal” you will see a bunch of images where the sparks are intensely packed in an almost solid stream at the contact point and they are thrown directly backwards. You want to keep your arms away from that area…trust me! I’ve cut a lot of metal…

Anyway, I think the work you did on this is profound. I’ll definitely head over to the tutorial this weekend! Thanks.

Very nice!
Use the same partical data to add volumetric glow particles that emmit heat, and then also have instances of metal “shards” that are actually faces that are peeled off the metal, then it will look 100% real,
I have been working on modeling volumetrics emission for caustics, and have a concept but need help, basically it is using a sphere as the smoke boundry, and rendering from a camera point at each vert to bake a map for its emmission

Simple yet effective.
Good Work!

Very good work ! The effect is truly this one. By the way thanks for the tip in photoshop, those filter are awesome !

Simple and powerful as usually…Good work Andrew

Pretty much!

Holy shit! 8-O How long did it take to render the animation?

It’s awesome!

i think he said about 2 weeks on and off and that each frame took a few hours? not sure, but i know that they are crazy render times
