Sphere made of uniform sized cubes

Hello,

I’m fairly new to using Blender. I’ve been trying to create a sphere made of uniformly sized cubes. The closest thing I’ve found is to create a NURBS surface and convert it to a mesh. Then extrude by individual faces (see attached image). I thought, cool - I’ll just create a NURBS sphere and then convert to a mesh, extrude and be done. But that didn’t work. I ended up with a mess of all shapes and sizes of quads. I’ve Google’d a lot but cannot find any way to do this. Has anyone done something similar?
Thanks.

Does this fit the bill?
Segment near the equator may look good but eventually you’ll get to the poles…

How about this? It’s not perfect, but you can play around with the particle settings and the cube sizes to get what you need.

Ack! Eppo beat me to it.

And we both missed - welcome on the forum!

Eppo and Safetyman,
Thank you both so much. This helps a lot. I hadn’t thought of using particles. This is very close to what I was trying to do. And thanks for the welcome to the forums. I look forward to learning more about Blender, so far I’ve had a lot of fun with it. Again, thanks - you guys rule!
