SSS and Diffuse map - Please save me from going NUTS!

I know practically nothing about skin texturing so I have been working with the Ben Simonds tutorial on SSS. He suggests using a diffuse map to create the surface detail.
I was thinking I could add a diffuse map for the shin details like freckles and such, and then add another map for strong details like makeup. Don’t know if this is right or not.
My main problem right now is, every time I add a diffuse map I lose all the SSS. Nothing shows thru. Transparency does not seem a good solution as I still lose detail. Am I missing something with alpha channels? How do I do it?

SSS is not a map you can paint. It is a kind of transparency so it is dependent on how light strikes the object.
