St. Jöris Monastery - Part 1

First picture of the former monastery St. Jöris near Aachen, Germany, as it looked like around the year 1900. This excerpt includes more or less everything, which still exists today.
Blender 4.2.2, Cycles, 100 samples, around two and a half minutes render time on 3090.

So … what a very interesting(!) piece of German history! Can you show us reference photographs of “what exists today?” Where are you now intending to go with this project? Are you “going back in time …?”

I have a personal “soft spot” for projects which try to re-create what used to be, for the education and edification of the present day. CG technology can do this like nothing else ever could …

It seems that you used displacement for the bottom part of the buildings…how do you managed the corners and avoided geometry to open it self.

Thank you for your reply! This is how it looks like today:

The roof is now flat but you can see where it has been.

The complete monastery exists as a hand-crafted model. I am recreating this.

The corners are bevelled and textured continuously. It does not look perfect but from a distance this is ok.

Well, I think it works quite well…at least on this image.

I featured you on BlenderNation, have a great weekend!
