Stainless Steel/Matalic style materials and textures help

I have been using blender for a bit now but mainly for using the game engine and now I want to do some high poly rendering with nice realistic looks and textures. Anyway I have start with modelling a metal bar, something very simple, and now I want a to give it a metalic material or texture (the same sort like on a spoon or a stainless steel hand basin or sink).

How to I go about it?
What in blender should I be looking at that will give me the effect I desire?

You would use either envmaps or raytraced reflections. I prefer raytracing, though it takes more processing power, I find it easier to use and it gives better results. Here is a flash tutorial:
