Thanks, but I used that lighting as if it were on display…and also softer lighting might take away some details. But maybe your right.
I really like this! I just saw an episode where Spock and Kirk were playing chess on this board.
I agree that the lighting kind of harsh. Try lighting it like in this tutorial. Just an idea…

Lighting does need a bit of a different effect, but otherwise very cool. I remember learning how to play this back in the 1970s! It’s been a long time, though, and I can’t recall any of it.
I wish I could change the lighting…but I lost my .blend file when I junked my old computer. Maybe I will model it again. (If anyone wants the blueprints let me know)

I seem to remember the design being in the original Star Fleet Technical Manual 
what coincidence, i was just watching an episode with 3 dimensional chess last night!
I am trying to model it again but I dont know how to make two colors on a mesh in the new Blender 2.5 like you can see I have blue stripes on every other square. I know how to do it in the old blender but dont want to download it… Any help?

sure, you go in to edit mode, select the vertices and click “assign” on the materials panel. 
Yeah I tried that…not sure what I am doing wrong.
hmmm… this is the only thing i can think of: did you make sure the desired material was selected? :spin:
Yes I messed with it for 10 minutes…it just changes the color of the whole mesh. Weird
I figured it out. I had to go into face select mode and do it that way. At least its a start. Now I need to find a good material and a tutorial on realistic lighting. Any Ideas?

i’d also suggest a “Bevel” modifier at like 0.01(depending on how big your model is) set to “Angle”
