Star Trek U.S.S. Exeter Showcase (my first animation)

So, this is my first animation. I made it back in April and submitted it to a contest at my school. It won first place all the way to state. Anyway, I actually had some more scenes set up (it would have been as long as the entire song), but my computer just couldn’t render that fast. Most of the stuff that makes it look bad in because of my time limit, and my poor computer. Lighting is definitely something I’ve worked on since then, same with compositing. I hope to redo this animation soon. In the meantime, enjoy!

Aw, I was kind of hoping for a TNG-style flash at the end of the warp jump.

Motion blur and some bad camera work (variable tracking of the subject) would make these shots a lot more believable. Great texturing.

Here is my latest render of the same model, I can definitely see where I’ve improved, which is a good thing.

Hmmm, the texture on the dish hull plating looks a bit extreme. But otherwise very impressive.

really nice work on the texture, the animation is cool too but I think it would be better with some variation of the light, a bit more contrast between what is in the light and what is in the shade… and yes, for the animation, next step… warp jump!

That’s for all the tips guys! They will be helpful in the future! Keep in mind of course, I had only been using Blender six months at the time I made this animation (that doesn’t mean constructive criticism is not welcome). I still want more opinions on things I can work on.

Really nice model. True to the series. I especially like the lights (on the bridge for example). Can you explain how you did those?

Just glare nodes, and that’s it. I might make a tutorial on how to do the compositing for a starship later.

Nice work. Blender seems to come a long way since 2008.

Well, He would’ve gotten away with the warp drive that he had. All he needed was to just add some clouds emitting from the engine like the last few warp jumps did in the video. As a matter of fact, I came across a blender file that did just that. I’m pretty sure that there’s a tutorial for that online some where.

I want to figure out how to make the kind of warp jump with the light streaks shooting out the back. I would love tips. I’m experimenting with doing it with particles, which is the logical choice.
