Hi everyone, I’m trying to model this Star Wars spaceship turret, but I’m having trouble with the circular part at the base of the barrel. Does anyone know how I could model it? I’m not very experienced with hard-surface modeling on circular shapes, and I’m trying to learn by working on this turret.
Do you mean this part here, around the base of the gun? It’s the one piece I see here that’s somewhat difficult, so I guess that must be what you mean.
I would first get the overall shape, then make the hole in it. I am assuming you aren’t using subdivision here, as you didn’t mention it, and I will make a low to mid poly model. If you want a subdivided model, just ask and I can adapt the answer.
1- Start with a quarter of a cylinder.
2- Bevel the edge.
3- Inset the faces.
4- Delete the inset section, slide the vertices to get them away from the corners so there is space for bevels.
5- Bevel the corners to get the smoothed look of the reference. Dissolve edges if needed to get this result.
6- Finishing touches. I use solidify for thickness, added a fine bevel to the edge of the hole and used weighted normals to make the shading a bit nicer.
Oh my God, this is perfect, thank you so much.
