Steam locomotive

had a little idea for a short film, but i require a steam train so i am attempting to build one.
if there are any train fans here it is based on the BR Standard Class 3MT 2-6-2 Tank 82028 BR Lined Black Lt engine

it still has a lot of work to be done on it but i’ll keep updating as i progress (hopefully i’ll get this one finished  )

its looking pretty good

thanks.
modelled the side box thingys and fixed the front walkway. next to do the wheel attachment and then start on the drive pistons.

didn’t get as much done as i wanted, i must have forgotten to save it as my mesh had reverted to to original curved front so i had to remodel the from section again. anyway i got most of the rear done as well as getting a basic chassis in place, it still need some detailing, not quite sure what ad my references dont really show that part, oh well i’ll figure something out (or make something up!)

This is starting to look great! With a good texture, it could be enougth

thanks. i’m still trying to find a decent reference for how the drive pistons fit together, as well as the chassis frame as i want it to look convincing close up ( i intend to composite it into video footage). i’m almost sure the blueprint reference i have has the front wheels slightly too far forwards, but that might just be because the piston assembly hasn’t been put in place yet.

i also added the front windows to the drivers cabin, but doing so has messed up the curve of the roof, so i will need to fix that as well. once i get those couple of things done i can then start to put in the details.

so, i have the pistons in place and the drive piston is rigged so that it turns the crank, but when i try to create links to the other cranks and the wheels it stop working. i tried using parenting, constraints, empties, each time it either breaks the rig or has no effect or it throws everything out of sync. kind of annoying but i’ll figure it out soon

ok so managed to fix the main drive wheel now i just need to make it run the other wheels.

yes, i am awesome  a little IK rig and some limit Rotiaton/copy rotation constrains and the whole thing runs off a single empty.

now i can happily get back to the actual modelling :RocknRoll:

This is coming along really well! It looks even cooler with the moving wheels!

yeah the wheels took some figuring out!
i have done a couple of smal details and then decided to add the rivets. i could not figure out how to use a simple duplivets system and have them automatically stick where i wanted them. they all simply piled on top of each othe and sat there mocking me as i tried to herd them into place. i then tried to use an array to spin them around the boiler, would they spin? Nooo they wanted to spiral and corkscrew and be off set and just anything they could to not be on the $"£%ing boiler!
so i deleted them all and painted them in using hair particles, now it looks like my train was built by drunkards :frowning:
but- i have the tecnique now and just need to refine the positions.

hurrah for the grease pencil, rivets are all in place and looking pretty good, going to finish off the chassis and do the bumper thingys, add some pipe work and some small details then i will think about texturing.

what do you guys recon? the [500x240[ekm].jpg"]green](http://www.osbornsmodels.com/ekmps/shops/osbornsmodels/images/372-329-farish-br-standard-class-3mt-2-6-2-tank-82041-br-lined-green-l-cres-23217-p[ekm) or the black?

looking really nice  I like the black one!

yeah, the blacks quite nice, it seems to have been a lot more common than the green in real life

anyway fixed some bumpers added, the dome on the boiler and finished (?) the rear chassis section next job- pipe work…

added some of the pipe work, didn’t get to play as much as i wanted this week but oh well. i’ll get the brakes fitted next as the rest of the pipe work seems to fit around them. not sure if i will rig the brakes yet, they may just be decorative. will have to find some references for the cab interior if possible. might just make something up, its not like i’ll be focussing on the interior of the train.

mustn’t forget the G clamp on the pistons. then more pipework…

setting some base materials just to see at the moment. also modelled a brake system. its totally not authentic and probably wouldnt work in real life but the model looks like it has brakes

fixed the black rivets on the cab. i just duplicated the particle system and added a green particle object, tweaked a few of the colours slightly and added the decorative banding. just need to find a logo image for the side tanks then i can unwrap them and UV the logos and tank number. modelling i just need to add the front tank number and a couple of those pesky pipes underneath and the steps that should be dotted around. i’ll probably do the shed number badge as well soon. i started on the rails just to make it look interesting, though i havnt done the sleepers yet. i’m thinking of doing a scene render while i figure out my physical locations and storyline etc. and as i need to do some extensive moddelling of the old station anyway i might as well build the whole thing! ( the council saw fit to plant a load of trees on the original station that i was going to use. will be tricky photoshopping them out for the film!)
anyway. updated paint job.

actaually, i’m going to paint it red. the company whos line i am using had a nice wine red colour. ( a little bit deeper than the red banding that i currently have applied.

Nice rigging

I like where you’re going with this. I want to see the final product. I hear what you’re saying about the rivets. I’m currently trying to decide whether or not to do them as a texture or model them. I was unfamiliar with the method you used. Thanks for introducing it to me.
