Steampunk Huntress: Desert Scene

Here’s something I render earlier this week.
The character and vehicle model is originally created for a modeling challenge in indocg.com (2012).
however I never had a chance to stage her in a scene. So I decided to do a quick desert scene.

done in blender, render in cycles.

everything is almost the same colour as the background. the image looks flat, and feels like the pieces of the image have been pasted in like a bad photoshop job. why has she got a massive robot leg? shes never going to be able to walk with that thing!

The models and environment look great, but it is a little hard to make out the details. Hopefully you have time to rearrange the picture to make the model stand out more. There are several ways to do it, including a) changing her costume colors to a cooler color to contrast the sand, b) adding backlight, c) adding a spotlight and backlight while turning down GI, making the light on the background bluer with skylight, while light on her could stay warm, but the best option might be to silhouette her against the sky, and then adjust the pose so that you can make out the difference between her and the bike. This way, she can also be backlit by the sun.

I dont mind the colours since if she is a huntress she probably doesn’t want to stand out too much. Plus I like the general arrangment of the scene (it’s like she’s on a stakeout). I can’t really see, but I get the impression the car has legs? My main critique would be that the pose of the character seems a little awkward. Her left hand is just hanging there, and it looks like she’s about to slip off her seat.

@small troll: it’s not her leg :D, It’s the vehicle… you see… this is the concept…

This is another render of the model and vehicle (standing)

btw, are you trolling with me??

@niverik2k: thank you. Actually the idea of the scene is somewhat like @fade said. she’s in stake out in the shades. as you can see, I’m not going for clean feel, that’s why I add lens dirt, (and makes it all blurry  )
but I do agree with you and am looking for a way to make her stands out more…

@fade: you’re right about that right arm, it’s definitely need a tweak… umm… actually she’s sitting on the leg of the vehicle… I’m trying to get her in sniping position before, and use the walker leg as her mount…

lol i see it now.

there is very little contrast between the models, and the reason it looks flat is because you have a major light source directly behind the model , she should be in deep shadow there. bounce lighting simply wouldn’t be strong enough to illuminate that area and the lighting you have put in there is merging the colours together.
if it was animated you might get away with it as movement would define the story and you could make the area more naturally lit (though not realistically as you would still only get shadows moving in shadows!)

for a still i would recomend ditching the bright sun background and have a deep desert blue sky and bring the sun to nearer midday so the main light is coming down, at a slight angle, you could then be free to have some back light as if reflecting of the big rock which will help outline her and sperate her from the car.

also i would ditch the old photo effect as all that is doing is making it look like it is snowing, and it is overly blurred making you lose detail in the models features and surroundings.
posing the model i would put her on the bonnet of the car, with her right foot on the bonnet for support and the left leg on the car bumper just for casualness and have her sighting down the barrel of the gun. that will give her something to do with her hands.

and your rock texture is stretched on the rock just behind the girl.

and no i’m not trolling, people don’t have the humour for it any more.

Tldr, so sorry if my points have been mentioned already.
I like the vehicle design and modeling, and also the character and the scenery.
The vehicle looks like it’s awkwardly balanced on one leg. Her left hand is posed strangely. Overal, the image lacks contrast.

Great render overall. I dig the vehicle design (where did you get that?).

Just a little smushed colors-wise. Also, I think I’m seeing SSS on her skin in the top render, but tone that way the heck down.

The pose is awesome, just could be more clearly defined with some better lighting - that left hand you could just throw behind her like she’s leaning on it to keep balance on her carbikemechtank’s knee.
