STEP import

Dropped you some € on https://opencollective.com/surfacepsycho

To anyone reading, this is quality work and entirely worth it if you can spare.

I hope you’re planning to bring this to feature parity with the original add-on. THe option to switch between “artist friendly” parameters (i.e. a simple “Mesh detail” value) and the more detailed deflection settings would really be helpful.

Interesting because I do remember those options but I don’t think of any way it could have been removed by my changes. Can you confirm it was still there in the latest STEPper release ?

@RomainGuimbal Thank you very much for your work!!!

Yes, that’s where my screenshot comes from. But for them to show up, I need to deactivate “Artist friendly parameters” in the add-on’s settings:

Your port doesn’t have that option (or any options, for that matter):

Ah ok, this must be the a change with the new extension format, I’ll take a look, thanks

@RomainGuimbal

Thanks for continuing support of this addon as it is extremely important to me.

I checked out your version and one thing I would like to confirm: any way/plan to maintain file names? I noticed all the part names which used to be maintained in Stepper were just sequenced numbers with Reborn.

I work with massive STP files (1000s of parts sometimes) and keeping the names is important for grouping parts.

I am looking how to make a place for people to tip pot and once it reaches some goal I will work on it. I cannot invest more personal time on it right now for free as I don’t need it currently. But of course anyone can give it a try as it is opensource.

Help get everything fixed by contributing here ! :rocket:

hi ambi,
do you have the 1.0 version of STEPper?
I need it to run on linux~

This has been super helpful to me. I see your Surface Psycho addon also does step imports. Is there a difference between the two?

Yes, the great difference is SurfacePsycho creates one object per surface patch, it is really for editing. With STEPper you get meshed solids so it is way lighter and better suited for rendering.

Thank you, that’s really good to know!

Hi @ambi , been using your addon for a while. Since about the 30th of September, it doesn’t work any more with current 5.0 builds. It doesn’t crash or anything, it runs through, but only creates empty objects.
Have you seen this?

My fun workaround is not working anymore with Blender 4.5 and the update Version 1.1.8 and the Stepper Reborn. It does work in Blender 4.2 though

@ambi, you have seemed to have dropped off the surface of the world. Can we expect any news or updates any time soon? Even if it’s just to bring the compatability over for Blender 5.0, no need for any fancy new features.

I may have some good news. Stay tuned

Hello everyone,
is the part appearance such as diffuse and spectral color, shininess and transparency that has been exported to the .stp file carried over into blender?
My concern is to avoid re-doing the appearance of assemblies part by part once imported.
Thanks!

They come in, but to a limited extrent, just basic colour. I always have to replace materials to get the models to look how I want.

@ambi I am pinging you again.

I have managed to update the addon to the latest OCC release and bring it back up to date with Blender 5.1 compatability. As you released it under GPLv3 license I plan to release it back to the community in 14 days unless of course we hear back from you and you still intend to maintain the addon.
