I have been wanting to practice organic modeling and good edge flow for a while now. I considered just practicing making the human form, but I thought it might be more of a challenge to try my modeling study with something of my own creation.
I did a sketch of a creature a while back while I was at work. I didn’t really know what I was drawing as I put lines on the paper and so the design is a little less than practical. I liked the concept though, so I drew him a few more times and came up with a back story to explain the characteristics of this alien species.
They are all obese because they “eat” via photosythesis and they live on a planet with an overabundance of sunlight. So they cannot stop eating during the day time. They excrete their waste via oil on their skin. They breathe through the esophogus-like tubes protruding from their necks, which also act as gill-like filters. They have powerful arms to support their large bodies. They are very ponderous beings, owing to the fact that they do not have legs and hence lack the ability to move and use their hands at the same time. Whenever they want to use, touch or otherwise examine something, they have to sit down to do so.
I haven’t the slightest idea what to name him however and when it came time to save the file out for the first time I gave him the temporary title of “Steven”
At this point I am more concerned about edge flow and good topology than I am about the form. I will work on that later (as you may notice, I haven’t even gotten to the hands yet). Steven is only intended for still renders, but I would like to have good edge flow for animation. Any suggestions or critiques you may have on the topology are welcome. I am mostly concerned with the shoulder area. I just can’t seem to come up with something I’m satisfied with.
