stop/ pause animation render

I watched a blenderguru tutorial where Andrew at some moment paused, and later on stopped an Animation Rendering…
somehow I didn t see how he did that, the cursor was on the 3D view, but no screencast keys to tell what he exactly did:(
someone can help me out???

To stop an animation render press Esc or X button

To pause a cycles 3d view preview render press the pause button
