Stylized Mesh Fire.
I checked out a breakdown video for cartoon fire by Kevin McKraken on YouTube and used his technique to create my own, so here it is so far:
Made with a couple icospheres with displacement modifiers to mimic the movement of fire. The shader uses a magic texture with a gradient and some transparency. One issue is that the fire isn’t visible from the top since it’s a 3d mesh.
Here’s what it looks like in Blender 2.8, though I’m not sure how to remove the wireframe look it has.
