Subdivision Surface Adds Planes to Object

Hello all,
I’m trying to apply a displaced material to the shown object but when I use the subdivision surface modifier a couple of planes are added which I have been unable to remove. So, my question is what do I need to do to use subdivision surface and just get the starting object shape? Also, I’ve found that in order for the material to apply correctly I must use the subdivision modifier. Just adding geometry to the surface does not do it. Thanks.

This happens because you are using Ngons.

Get rid of the ngons for subsurf to work properly.

You could also add just a couple of edges to hold the curve but it would probably be better to get rid of the ngons altogether in the long run.

(this may seem familiar if you use a CAD program, solid modelers also add these edges to control surfaces)

Thank you so much!
