I’m following a tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2KO9svSdKU He shows how to add Subsurface Scattering to the eyeball texture. When I do it, the render looks awful. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? This is the first time I have tried using subsurface modeling, and I know the result should be subtle. But I am doing something really wrong for my render to come out so bad. He doesn’t do much with the character’s right eye because of the spot light positions.
You might have to make use of both the front and back scattering parameters to get a proper SSS effect (as I see what appears to be back-scattering, but no front-scattering)
It may also be due in part to limitations in the BI version of SSS concerning not being able to take into account the point of view of every lamp in the scene, meaning you can’t just set back-scattering and be done with it.
Thanks for responding. I turned the mirror off, but I saw little difference. In the tutorial, he used the subsurface scattering to soften some blocky shadowing near the eyes. I didn’t know that was the purpose of subsurface scattering. I don’t see any blocky shadowing near the eyes of my character, so I’ll skip the subsurface scattering for now.
