Hi! This is my latest piece of work - an animation short called “Summer in the City”.
Here you can see the full animation:
The scene was completely made in Blender 2.93 LTS - incl. compositing and video editing. Rendering was done in Cycles with 256 samples/frame, the lighting is achieved via a Nishita sky texture. In total there are 1000 frames of pure animation @24fps (1550 in total with intro and outro) and the rendering took about 5h (I made use of the SheepIt renderfarm).
I created the scene from scratch within 3 weeks, but I already had a few assets lying around (mainly cars). Everything you can see was modelled by myself, except the characters - I bought the PolyArt character pack a few months ago and changed what I needed.
All animations of the people in the scene are standard animations from mixamo.com. Animating is a really cool task, but I admit I need some more training and the mixamo animations for standard actions like walking look very good and also save tons of time (which is a precious good when working full-time and being a dad).
For the flags and curtains I used the awesome “Simply Cloth Pro” addon for Blender and added varying wind strength; the grass movement is achieved by a turbulence force field. The tree animation is even simpler: I created a 2-bone armature and added the stump and the foliage to one bone each with automatic weights, then added some low noise to the bones.
As for the shading: I mainly used a rough material (0.85 roughness) with different colors. I also added some special materials, like dark glass (cars, tram), transparent glass (buildings) and very simple mix shaders (e.g grass). I was experimenting with metallic materials for the cars a bit but rejected the idea in the end since I like the look better without.
The background sounds are done by my friend Michael (https://twitter.com/MerlinnSound). I added the different sound strips via the video editing tool in Blender.
What is left to say? The animation got its flaws and I know what I did wrong - at the buildings I used one boolean which cuts two objects at the exact same plane - this causes the flickering. Unfortunately I only found out after rendering ![]()
I hope you enjoy my little scene and got some feedback for me - so I can make my next project even larger and better! And: thanks for the read <3
